PB0 Abbreviations & Notes for Database v3
Notes
Since batches are compilations of earlier files there is uniformity of format within each file but differences between batches, eg row height usually 17.4 but can be 20
Prefix letters & numbers for notes & footnotes removed from batches for database but kept in my working files, SEE references also removed
My preference for places has been pre 1974 counties & recent districts, for towns & cities taking account of local authorities & distance from centre – most outer suburbs usually not included. As this will be related to the mapping system, it will be best if my decisions are replaced by whatever works for the mapping system.
All places stated to be Liverpool believed to be Liverpool local authority, the other places in this file are Northern outer suburbs believed to be in Sefton local authority; Eastern outer suburbs excluded & in St Helens & District Word file
Where I have put ? this means either not reported or report unclear, occasionally not clearly legible.
Notes & statistics in separate file –only sample file for Liverpool sent at this stage. Hopefully these can be used at some stage but would require further checking & editing.
I have checked for accuracy as far as I can, especially to ensure dates are correct. There will inevitably be some mistakes & discrepancies (some arising from the original newspapers) but I hope they will be at an acceptably low level. I think these files are now more logically organized & hopefully easier to understand. Given the limits of my stamina & only basic expertise at Excel, I do not think I can improve them any further.
Batches 1 to 5 expecting few future additions & amendment from Guardian post July 1941. I am working on Batch 6 Bury, Salford & Wigan area & Batch 7 Manchester (676 names so far) – these will have significant new names & some amendments post July 1941 from Guardian (for most titles approx. 80% of names found before mid 1941.
I would like if possible to get as much of Lancashire on the new database as we can – ideally up to 3,000 – but have no idea how long the process will take. It should be easy enough to add new names & amendments later from Guardian from August 1941 + Rosendale & Stockport papers. New names will be straightforward to add. For amendments or additional information, might it be easier to substitute the whole row in the database? I am doubtful whether it is worth adding solely reference to an additional source, when there is no additional information
