Warwick-Haller, Samuel (33), Westholme, Hornsea, child of shipowner who died when he was 14, ex-soldier (YEP), left being solicitor in Hull 10/38 for outdoor life, special constable as regarded police as necessary, registered 7/40 as small holder & voluntary unpaid farm worker for long hours, East Riding War Agricultural Ctte had investigated & were not satisfied he qualified to be reserved, CO to any active participation in war effort but would grow food for community, when asked about imported butter said he was prepared not to eat it, Rev JE Clague of Roundhay Methodist Church ex Hornsea, known him 10 years & testified he was pacifist before the war, chair said he was deliberately trying to evade obligations, LE 23/3/42 rejected, HUDM 24/3/42 p4, YEP 23/3/42 p8, YP 24/3 p6; Hull Police Court 21/9/42 Haller, Samuel W same address, pleaded guilty to refusing medical 8/6 & 1/7 as a CO after AT gave NCS 19/5/42, CO of 20 years standing & must be sincere in loyalty to God, not an absolutist – would do land work, fined £5 & detained for medical, HUDM 21/9/42 p1; Hull Police Court next day 22/9/42 still refused medical so maximum prison 12 months, Haller quoted case of Arthur Tomney of Bolton sentenced to 18 months 8/42 but Recorder reduced it to 6 months as he was sincere & a first offender – magistrate disputed Haller was first time offender as he had refused medical on several occasions, Haller said he must suffer ‘for purely conscientious grounds’ ‘based on his reading of New Testament’, witness John Campbell, Westbourne Ave, Hull, known Haller all his life testified that he has objected to OTC at school & been CO ever since, HUDM 22/9/42 p1, YP 22/9 p6
